The new EP, Alternate Reality, really pushes into Genres some of your audience may not be used to you going. What do you say to them?
If they aren’t used to the music on Alternate Reality than they haven’t listened to any of our releases for the last 2 years. Ever since our Rituals LP we have been covering all corners of bass music. The tracks here shouldn’t be too much of surprise.
Of the members of Terravita, which one would survive the longest in the wild?
Probably Matt. He was just living in the woods at Shambhala for like a week before and after. He is a nature boy….at least when Shambhala comes around.
Terravita is a central piece of the Safe In Sound Festival. How has it been being a part of the only touring Bass music festival?
It is amazing to see so many people come together for bass music in every city all across North America. We are very lucky to be a part of Safe In Sound as the resident artist. Seeing that many people lose it to 150,000 watts of PK sound is always a magical experience. It is an honor to be the only act that plays every Safe In Sound event.
If you were given the chance to build your dream house in one place, where would it be and why?
Chris – Probably in Laguna or Newport Beach. Close to the water and chill, but also close to LA and the airport.
Jon – The French Riviera for sure, one of the most beautiful places in the world. The food and wine and culture there are insanity plus it’s a stones throw from Spain and Italy which are two other places I would consider for this question.
Matt – I’d pick a jet that I can live in. That way I can always travel and be at home at the same time.
Not long ago, you pushed back against claims that “dubstep was dead”. What is your assessment of the state of dubstep now?
At this point it is hard to tell where dubstep starts and ends and where bass music begins. Drumstep, Glitch Hop, Trap, Twerk and even Bassline House or Future Bass and all hybrids of the above are under the umbrella of bass music. These days most artists that people consider to be Dubstep actually play a variety of genres that fall under bass music. Bass music is alive and well and stronger than ever. The artists all experiment with sounds and bpm to a point that it is impossible to categorize it under one genre, hence the umbrella of bass music. People always talk about everything being dead like they just need something to talk about. Nothings dead over here in Dubstep/ Bass music, things are just evolving.

“I just got back from Shambhala and had the pleasure of witnessing Terravita absolutely slay,” Firepower boss man Datsik says. “I’m excited to present their new EP out on Firepower Records and can’t wait to hit the road with them again for Safe In Sound next month.”
The Alternate Reality EP is Terravita’s next musical masterpiece in a string of chart topping accomplishments, and it features some forays into alternate realities of bass music production, solidifying this EP as a `dynamic and diverse piece of work.
Leading the EP is a massive collaboration between Terravita and Th3 Cats called “Girl & Robot”. A traditional dub structure sets the foundation including a solid dub style vocal hook. The signature Terravita melodies build into a wall-of-sound that puts the pressure on and keeps it there. The next track “Fat Wad” immediately shifts direction into an alternate Bass Music reality. Juxtaposing the beautiful and soaring vocals with an aggressive and grimey Trap inspired beat breakdown, the track elicits both an urge to sing to the heavens and stomp the earth in a frenzied rage. “Fat Wad” is perfect track for the peak hour and will be included in setlists all over the globe.
Continuing to explore the alternate realities of Bass Music, Terravita venture into a world where bass heavy Electro House and filthy Dubstep co-exist in same song. This formula has wreaked immeasurable amounts of havoc on dancefloors because of the demand on audiences to shift from shuffling at 128 BPMs, to headbanging to a massive Dubstep drop. “Do My Thing” is an absolute wrecker, and the brain tickling synth arrangements will only incite audiences to rage harder.
It seems like it wouldn’t be a proper release without the masterful lyricism of Terravita’s own Jon Spero. “Don’t Turn On The Lights” is a heavy metal infused modern bass music destroyer. Screeching guitar solos match the pumping synth patterns, and the track sounds like it could be an encore at a Guns n’ Roses concert. The energy of Dubstep and Metal are very similar, and Terravita, perhaps more than any other Bass Music producers, capture that expertly in every one of their releases.
Finally, RIOT comes through with a face melting remix of “Fuel To The Fire”, the title track From Terravita’s previous chart topping EP. There is no doubt that RIOT held nothing back. From the get-go, the track pumps and pulses through the build-up and crushes the listener with an absolutely filthy drop. The track toggles back and forth from sections of expert lyrical wordsmithing to massive builds. When the beat does drop, it’s chaos.

LOS ANGELES (January 9, 2014) On January 20th, Firepower Records will release Terravita’s very clever and engaging Gunpowder EP, and there’s no reason why this release won’t ignite the race to festival season early. Gunpowder is focused on moving sound design in a new and creative direction, drawing on classic dance elements of the past like funk and 1960’s Psychadelic rock while utilizing the hard-hitting elements of modern Dubstep. As a result the tracks are unlike anything we’ve heard from Terravita before. But Terravita’s notorious Bass-forward production philosophy and diligent work ethic all but ensures a massive, mind-splitting EP.
Opening the EP is “Blaze with Me”, a Funk infused track with a west coast Rap vibe led by the ubiquitous slap bass. Firepower Artists have increasingly popularized gangster rap revivalism in Dubstep, and this combination of musical forces makes “Blaze with me” an absolute head-nodder.
“We Can Do It Too” is a peak hour festival rager. Terravita dug deep for this one. Pulling 60’s Psychadelic rock samples straight from the Mod Squad era, the track begins with a clever homage to that influential time in Dance music culture. But, then, the drop hits, and the buzz-saw synth obliterates whatever sanity a listener possessed going in. Terravita experiments with some interesting musical notation by incorporating the off-key soundscapes embedded in the Psych Rock samples, and the clever mid-beat sound effects add to the high level of havoc this track will wreak on a dance floor.
What would a Terravita EP be without some expert lyricism? “My Name” puts that lyricism front and center. This kind of hip-hop revivalism has increasingly appealing to a growing segment of Firepower’s fan base that seeks a connection between the mainstream and underground approaches to dance music. But “My Name” gives Terravita the opportunity to remind audiences that live lyricism has roots in the Drum and Bass game where live MC’s spit words over the beat. This track offers a great bridge between the past and the future.
Rounding out the EP is the title track, “Gunpowder”. With genre lines thoroughly blurred at his point in the EP, “Gunpowder” has a distinct countrified sound with all the fixings associated with modern Dubstep. Here is the early Hip-hop and Country Hybrid track popularized in the early 2000’s strapped to a massive bass cannon with the fuse lit.
The Tracklisting for the Gunpowder EP is:
1. Terravita – “Blaze With Me”
2. Terravita – “We Can Do It Too”
3. Terravita – “My Name”
4. Terravita – “Gunpowder”

LOS ANGELES (September 30, 2014) – Firepower Records will release Terravita’s four-track EP, Fuel To The Fire, on October 14th, and although this isn’t the first time Firepower and Terravita have released together, it comes during a period of unmitigated creativity and outstanding innovation in their live-performance philosophies. The Fuel To The Fire EP once again solidifies their place in American Dance Music.
The title track, “Fuel To The Fire”, immediately sets the tone of the EP. With upfront hip-hop lyricism that is conscious and aggressive, Terravita makes it known that dance music should offer the listener both intellectual substance and an ejection seat that thrusts the body into the stratosphere. Not all music should be designed for the festival sound system, but then again, that’s where the pinnacle of live sound experience can be found. “Fuel to the Fire” moves through both philosophies—a focused message in lyric form straight into head-banging savagery.
The throwback hip-hop vibe continues with a sampling of Master P’s 1997 hit “Make Em Say Uhh”. But where Master P lacked in energy Terravita makes up with a back-breaking Drum Step bass line and a series of filthy synth arrangements. Older listeners will be hooked by the nostalgia of Master P’s inflated ego, which was representative of the mainstream Rap game in the late 90’s, but the track just simply bangs. It’s not the same song, though, and you’ll appreciate that.
Holding down the last half of the EP is “Rawdog” and “Endangered Species”— two heavy, bass-forward productions. “Rawdog” delivers an epic helping of Dubstep, but the intermittent Hip Hop influenced Drum Step beat and piercing top-line provides some healthy complexity to a genre that can overstay its welcome without constant innovation. “Endangered Species”, then, goes straight to Funktown by leaning heavily on the seemingly competing but very complimentary Saxaphone/synth dual threat. Funk may be the endangered species here, but Terravita saves it from oblivion by installing some very precise Robo Cop-esque musical machinery to the dieing audio organism. This cross-genre party anthem will be a favorite to everybody within hearing distance. Who can’t smile when dancing to Funk?
The Tracklist for Fuel To The Fire is:
1. Terravita – “Fuel to the Fire”
2. Terravita – “Make Em Say Uhh”
3. Terravita – “Rawdog”
4. Terravita – “Endangered Species”

Today, TERRAVITA have released The Power Of Fire EP, seven deliciously wicked bass-in-your-face tracks for Datsik’s FIREPOWER label. In addition, the group will join Datsik on his national FIREPOWER tour beginning October 3 in Syracuse, NY. Beginning October 3 in Syracuse, NY, TERRAVITA will join Datsik on his recently launched national FIREPOWER Tour
The dubstep trio blazes with tracks like “Well Oiled Machine,” “No Room” and “MetROIDS.” Joining TERRAVITA on “Motive Unnecessary” is Philadelphia newcomer Shannon Swain, who provides a powerful female vocal on this hard-hitting number. There are also instrumental versions of “No Room” and “This Time Its Personal.” Every track on The Power Of Fire is a dance floor burner.
TERRAVITA was formed in 2004 when Chris Barlow, Matt Simmers and Jon Spero joined forces after meeting in the drum & bass scene in New England. Their first releases were tracks for Maldini & Vegas’ Bad Taste Recordings and Simon Bassline Smith’s Technique Recordings including the jump up hit “Adult Robot Kung Fu.” From there, TERRAVITA released several tunes with Subsonik Sound as well as a remix of AK1200’s rave anthem “Drowning” that hit #4 on the Beatport Drum & Bass Charts.
In 2010, TERRAVITA released “Up In the Club” on Beta Recordings, which hit #4 on the Dubstep charts and #94 on the Overall charts on Beatport, while “Lockdown” broke the Top 10 on Beatport’s dubstep charts. TERRAVITA released their debut EP in 2011 on Rottun featuring “Freak Out” and “The Beat Goes On” which both hit #6 on Beatport’s dubstep charts, while “Break The System” hit #2 on Beatport’s dubstep charts. TERRAVITA did it again with a remix of Tremourz & J.Rabbit’s “Sexy Party” which held down the #1 spot on Beatport’s dnb charts for over a month. The group went on to release the Dirty Rottun Scoundrels EP on Rottun Recordings. The EP was the #4 overall release on Beatport for several weeks and contained the hits “Lords & Ladies” and “Are You Ready For Me.”
Now well into 2012, this year is shaping up to be big for TERRAVITA. The group has highly anticipated remixes coming out for Steve Aoki ft Lil Jon & Chiddy Bang, Yelawolf, Zedd, Bare & Datsik and Bassnectar, and now they will unleash the heat with The Power Of Fire plus a coveted spot on the FIREPOWER Tour.
